Using a Work-Study Program to Pay for College

While some colleges and degree programs offer a work-study program that is designed to work hand in hand with the degree you are pursuing, there is also a Federal Work-Study Program that you can look into for college financing. This program is available for undergraduate and graduate students that have financial needs.

Each school has to apply to have some work-study money. What they receive will depend on the programs they offer and their accreditation status. If your school offers these awards, how much you can receive will be based on when you apply, how much your financial need is, and how much money your school has that is ear-marked for this program.

The way you will be paid and the amount you will be paid will depend on what degree you are pursuing. If you are pursuing a Bachelor’s degree, you will be paid by the hour, at least once a month. If you are a graduate student, you may be paid by salary or by the hour, depending on what kind of job you hold.

The really nice thing about these awards is that you will automatically have your school schedule and your work schedules accommodate each other. You will be assigned hours of work based on your class schedule as well as your academic progress. For this reason, at least, you need to be sure to keep your grades in a good position so that your work schedule will continue to be optimized for your benefit.

The work you are assigned will be on-campus work but depending on the school and its programs, sometimes it will be off-campus work. The work that is performed must be in the public interest (according to the Federal Work-Study guidelines) or relevant to your course of study. The off-campus work will be with a public agency to meet this public interest requirement or with a private nonprofit organization.

If your work is with a private for-profit company, it will need to be relevant to your course of study. This will actually do two things for you. It will allow you to work and earn money for college but it will also give you hands-on experience during your college years which will give you an extra plus on your post-college resume for employers. You will have trained and worked in your field of study making you a valuable entrance level employee.

Financial aid comes in all kinds of packages. A package providing aid and experience is the best kind of work-study program available.
